Description

Founded around 1490 by Xoán Mariño de Sotomayor, it gained importance towards the end of the 18th. Century, thanks to Catalan businessmen who set up the salted meat industries here, in which the entire village of Vilaxoán was involved.

To this day, the traditional fishing community has been preserved, with its picturesque and gaily coloured houses, such as the Pazo Sobrán, which was built upon the foundations of an ancient monastry dating from the 11th. Century.

The Burgo Marinero de Vilaxoán (Seafaring Burg of Vilaxoán) was founded in 1490 by Xoán Mariño de Soutomaior. This was an important location for the salting industry at the end of the 18th century. Catalan businessmen settled in the town to boost the salting industry, which became one of the main economic motors for many of the town's residents. New industries and fishing techniques were introduced to Vilaxoán as of the 19th century. The most outstanding elements in this seafaring district are its multi-coloured houses, as well as an architectural complex formed by the Pazo (traditional rural estate) and the Church of San Martín de Sobrán, which is said to be built on the ruins of an 11th century monastery. All of this makes this village one of the most picturesque spots in the area.
